Am putting together a '92 GT Pantera AL for a friend - it's got a complete XT groupset....but....as it's fitted it with a threadless headset I'm not that sure about what stem to go with...could anyone give me suggestions of stems that would work well as I'm no expert on who made what and when

Any help gratefully received

seeing as it is blinged up with XT, might i suggest the up spec theme continues, with a syncros cattlehead. they look fantastic on GT's. what seat post is in it?

No seatpost yet and because it's for a friend I think he's going to want to economise...but would be interested to know what was around at the time...

Syncros stem ? Mmmm....good suggestion...I know so little that I wasn't aware they were around that early - thanks

from memory aheadset was a 93 type thing, so any ahead stem will be slightly out of absolute historical context. not that i would worry about that myself.

if its a budget build,i would think maybe also a nice simple GT cro mo flip flop ahead stem also. it will look right, and they can be found pretty inexpensively. i am sure someone here would have one sitting around..they came in black and silver.

How about Kore.Totally under rated nowadays but it was amongst the best.should pick up your desired size for under a tenner :? Or Kore Elite.

Thanks Merckx - exactly the kind of sound advice I was needing...I'm happy enough with the overall look of it that if I put a '93 stem on a '92 frame  he hopefully won't get arrested by the retro-police

Original steel GT if you can find any? But there won't be any a-head period stem for U-brake Pantera only close to.

Been away at work all week so only just got the chance to say thanks :D for all the suggestions....have started looking....like that steel GT stem a lot but may well end up going for Kore
