Grinding sound when pedalling

grinding sounds usually from bottom bracket or pedals. headsets and crank tapers tend to 'click'.

try deliberately causing the sound by pushing harder than usual at slow speed, left then right, see if you can pin the noise down. top jockey on cassette teeth will purr loud or rumble.

good luck.

I ditto on marc two tones bearings grinding somewhere.
But could be numerous things, you just need to work through them all.

Rear mech alignment? Sounds like the chain is trying to shift when you power down. Though if anything it'd be more a clicky noise than a grindy one.

This may sound daft, but are you totally sure it's not the saddle making odd noises??

+1

Take the saddle and seat-post out and see if it makes the noise. The number of times I've farted with BBs just because of an ungreased saddle clamp

Another low cost tip; swap pedals from another bike one by one before you go off and start spending money on the wrong thing.

ok...maybe not the knees!!

Are the wheels new?? I had a new set of wheels on a bike in 1993..when I really pushed on the pedals there was a strange "creaking" sound. It turned out that the rear spokes needed an extra "tweak"

Just a thought!!

Is the chain the right length? Sounds like there may not be enough tension and top jockey wheel may be rubbing on the bottom run of the chain. Pic would help.

Thanks for all's input.

Its defs not the seatpost or saddle as it only happens when pedalling including out of the saddle.

Not the pedals as have checked them, and the chain is a link too short if anything.

The chainset / BB is smooth when pedalling forward or back and in a workstand it doesnt reproduce the noise so is only under strain it happens.

I do get the clicking of the chain as well so will investigate the rear mech / chain but as said above it shifts sweet in the stand.

Have put tons of bikes together and this is the first time have come across this when everything looks perfect.

Hmmmm...

...in that case you need to look at the headset/stem/handlebars; can practically guarantee it won't be the drivetrain!
