Ah, gout - my friend. My dad was riddled with it (toes, ankles, knees, elbows - you name it). I get the occasional (every 6 months or so) attack in either big toe or either ankle and sometimes both. It's no joke; it bloody hurts. Trashes your joints as well; it's a derivation of arthritis.
He got some relief by taking allopurinol; no good for me, I'm allergic to aspirin and NSAIDs so I take probably the oldest gout remedy in the book - Colchicine. You can only take a course of 12; two to start off with then one every 3 hours. Take any more and it's one of these old style poisons. It turns your guts inside out. Very nasty stuff indeed.
