Going 9-speed

Hi - Apologies if this is a recycled topic, but I couldn't find anything conclusive from a quick search.

I currently have a 1992 Klein Rascal with 7-speed XT (730/732) and I'd like to go to a 9 speed setup. However, as I have cantis (and I don't think it's possible to put v-brakes on this model) I've got a feeling there are not any shifters which are 9 speed and levers compatible with cantis.

Is it possible to fit 9 speed shifters to an older XTR set of levers?

Your free bub body will need changing, new axles I believe and a wheel redish.

Not striaghtforward at all. Also 9 speed is not retro.

Thanks - I want to change the wheels anyway, my only question was regarding the shifters/levers.

I'll probably just go 8-speed anyway, 9 was just another option. Didn't want to offend anyone....

Old STI had separate shifter pods, newer does not. You could use canti - levers with 9spd pods such as these:
