Giant MCM Team

Every frame has its quirks, and more often than not it’s what seatpost size will actually fit.

This frame should take a 27.2mm dia post - at least that’s what I’m told by people that have owned several of them. Mine however arrived with an un-size-marked carbon ‘Giant’ post, which according to my callipers measures something like 27.7-8mm dia.

Put a 27.2dia post in the frame and it just drops right in.
Is it possible to stretch a carbon seat tube? Or can it be worn down by regular(!) seatpost extraction/insertion?
However a 27.2 dia post can be fitted - though the amount of tightening required on the seat clamp does not make for comfortable viewing;

So I thought I’ll run with the reading from callipers and get a shim to suit, and the result speaks for itself, even allowing the use of my preferred qr;

So in summary this frame does take a 27.2mm diameter post - just not without a little ingenuity.

Post shouldn't just fall into frame. Did these come with factory shims fitted?

It’s the first one I’ve had so can’t comment. Doubtful but you never know.
@1552 any knowledge of a shim in your experience?

The shim I’ve fitted is less than wafer thin!

That's interesting 🤔

I'm 99.9% I've fitted a 27.2 into mine, I don't think it's a "lose" fit but will double check tomorrow 👍

Unless it's had a stuck post and has been reemed a fraction?

Needed to do a ‘fit check’ today to gauge front end height and stem length as I’ve got a shorter stem I’d like to fit, but only if it’s comfortable.
This meant getting onto the bike, so needed to fit a BB;

A chainset;

Some pedals;

And a saddle;

Conclusion: 130mm stem currently fitted doesn’t want to be any shorter, but I could do with a little more height.

Final work for the day was a fork swap - which necessitated a steerer length reduction, so I aired on the cautious side to gain a little height. 190mm steerer in the end, and a couple of spacers.

Forks seem to function well, both legs holding pressure and no apparent fluid leaks, so hopefully just a fluid change and to get some new decals ordered.

I’m missing a few key parts to progress so that’s all for now :)
