Getting used to SPDs

After much deliberation... I've taken the plunge and ordered Some SPD shoes and pedals. They're actually Wellgo M919s but... you get the picture.

Has anyone got any tips for getting used to them? I'm doing another charity ride in June so, I thought I'd best get them early and get some practice in.

Ride just gentle off road the first few times as it's less embarrassing than in a town centre. You WILL have a couple of SPD-induced crashes (usually of the stationary topple variety) typically after a week or so as you get confident and forget about them.

After a fortnight or so it's second nature. 8)

Lean against a wall and get used to them. Don't set them too loose, as when you go out first time you'll be out of them more than in.
I rotate my left foot out just after top of pedal stroke, as momentum seems to be best there.
Before you know it, you'll not even know you're using them. Becomes second nature.
