I'm trying to get some bars into a stem without a removeable faceplate (note: they are the correct diameter bars for the stem) and before I resort to force and scratching the bejeesus out of them, any tips? Isn't there some sleight of hand with a 2p piece?

yep - pop the bolt out, put a 2p in the slot, and put the bolt back in from the wrong side *gently* and as it butts against the 2p, it'll open the clamp

riser bars? or just some awkward sweep?

What you do is unscrew the bolt put a 2p piece in and screw the bolt in the from the other side and it forces it open.

Thanks guys - I'm not sure if I'm misunderstanding but the 2p (and being flash, even a pound) fits in the slot without the need to remove the bolt, in fact it's a baggy fit.

The bars are just a regular flat bar but a very tight fit (other bars were a similar tight fit with this stem

I had a similar problem tonight only the threaded insert was a loose fit/replaceable so I had to resort to a screwdriver to tease it apart....not ideal but there you go.

ed - with the 2p in the slot, put the bolt in from the "wrong" side

as the bolt threads through it pushes against the 2p, opening the clamp.

I think you're misunderstanding - you have to screw the bolt against the 2p piece (the 2p is covering the hole it would normally go through). I'll try and draw it in a mo!
