Can age of a specialized bike be determined from the frame number?

Should be the first two numbers or letter and number.

I have a 1992 M2 - starts 92-----
My other spesh bikes follow that.

The older M________ serial numbers are 80s. M3------- = 1983

Specialized Epic, alloy frame. Sorry should have said earlier.

Hmm ... The epic shows up around 1988 according to specialized. Likely no newer than 1991. The ultimate goes into production around 1990 and the M2 series of frames take over.
