Yet another day started with a three hour wait for a train that never comes.

They've shut the line. Closed the two main roads out of Sussex and my own road is so iced, I have just had to walk up it throwing my gloves down one by one and walking on them. Short of crawling, this was the only way to advance up the pavement.

Having just called the council to find out why they still haven't gritted anything around here (including the station entrance - a steep incline with an ambulance station and a bus stop and an industrial estate off it).

Was told, the gritting is farmed out to a private company (of course) and that private company knows exactly how much grit they have etc and are holding it in store in case of emergency.

Astonishing.

The adverse weather has also caught the UK 'by complete surprise', and that 'no-one was preapred for it'...... utter bollocks.

'Cost saving exercises' and people too lazy to get off their fat arses and do their jobs more likely!

the salt and grit here was put dow at 8pm and refroze by 11pm.

one of my customers was most impressed by my carefully controlled handbrake turns and powerslides.

another was not when we did a perfect 180....

I have to point out that this was all done at less than 9mph.

Is there a significance to being less than 9mph?

I'm not surprised we have been "caught out". We just don't have the resources.

In Scandinavia, they don't bother gritting, the cars simply fit studded/winter tyres. In Germany cars switch over to winter tyres. Because they have long enough ice/snow periods to warrant this. (I think in Germany they just use sand as using rock salt is prohibited)

It just doesn't make any economical sense to have full Arctic winter preparation for the South when it happens for a week or two once every 3-4 years.

Bring on global warming :D

Have to say that the main roads between Skipton and Harrogate have been well looked after. A bit snotty first thing but seems to be plenty of gritting being done. 8)

It was very icy round my way yesterday.
I put the dustbin out, not expecting for a minute that it would get emptied, but it was. Most impressed.

Then I remembered it is a lucrative time of year for them!

I got in the car at 5.30 this morning and drove out of sussex no problem ! Go figure . . .

The a23 and a24 have both had crashes on them, talking of not being prepared were anyone else's town centre pedestrianised bit not gritted? Worthing was a flipping nightmare - the casualty department was full of xmas shoppers!

Its all the little estate roads that are the problem round here – main roads are clear, but as soon as you turn off them you'd better rename yourself Chris Dean and don some skates. Same thing happened back in Feb – all the roads to work were clear except the little side roads that actually get you onto the main roads. Simply couldn't get the car out of our street.

Best bit of news about this was reading that the chunnel was shut 'cause we had french snow that was too fluffy – priceless.

Unprepared? Unbelievable's more like it.
