Gearing which way to go

I tied kopperberg (20ish %) after over 100 miles in 39:25T predictably I ground to a halt.

Obviously I am not as hard as rider in the 80's.
 
I think that to a certain degree....riders had no choice but to use relatively higher gearing. Due, I think, to the difficulty in getting smaller chainrings, for example...
 
Well back in the early 80's we had to use 12t-17t or 13t-18t blocks, if you rode anything bigger you got laughed at and was considered a pussy!

So we just got on with the job of hammering up the hills no matter what! :facepalm:
