gear probs

advice please!
i have a brand new shimano chain on xtr cranks
and lx rear mech
the rear cassette is sram
are these fully compatable?
when under stress in the bigger cogs on the cassette
the chain goes from gear to gear jumping around
shop said needs new shimano cassette
its driving me nuts

A new chain on a worn cassette is asking for trouble. I bet it started the moment you replaced the chain....

FWIW Shimano chains have always had pitifully short lives for me, and I find that SRAM ones last much longer. Shimano chains run amazingly smoothly and quietly, but they just seem to be too soft.

yup rusty old chain was fine !
should i put it back on?

Change the cassette .

you can get a decent one for less than £20 on here .
