gear cable problems

Fitted new shifters and cables, but I cant get the rear mech to shift, it's in the highest gear as per the instructions I followed, but when I shift down it just stays there. :x

Slacken the barrel adjuster where the cable goes into the mech a half turn at a time. If you have a workstand this adjusting thing is much easier. Don't worry about fine adjusting until you have determined the two screws on the mech are also adjusted correctly. These prevent you from shifting over the top of the cassette into the wheel or off the bottom of it. I have found from experience, if you adjust the shifting on the 2 or 3 smallest sprockets on the cassette, the rest sort of fall into line too.

Or if your me, bo11ox to the stress of doing it yourself, drop it at your LBS on the way to work, relax during the day, collect on way home and for the sake of giving them a fiver you wont have got stressed and broken anything/shouted at wife/scared small children/kicked next doors cat etc

The other thing to check is the length of outer cable at rear mech, if too tight can cause exactly this issue, I presume the mech has been working before and is correct rise for shifter.

Also there is a sram / shimano compatibilty issue on mechs and shifters

A picture would help also.

Did something really embarrassing, didnt put the cable through the right bit in the shifter!

Will have to use that cable for the front mech now...
