If it's XP download combofix and let it do its magic.

If it's Vista upgrade the OS for her if its Win 7 re-install it.

As a general note if you end up doing a clean install of XP do not under any circumstances put Norton of McAfee products on it, use the freely available Microsoft Security Essentials.

I used Malwarebytes Anti-Malware..

Rebooted in safe mode (with networking), installed (and subsequently updated MBAM), ran a quick scan which found 2 probs, fixed them, rebooted normally... job jobbed.

Also installed Spybot S&D (which found no threats despite the laptop not being 'cleaned' for over a year) and CCleaner (cleared up LOADS of registry issues)..
Oh.. and Chrome.

Her McAfee subscription expires at the end of the year.. I'll install AVG then.

Apart from the antivirus, things like malaware and spybot I make on demand rather than slow the start up by selecting system configuration then the start up tab and untick any item that doesn't need to start at start up... Suprising how many people don't do this

Has she tried turning it off and on again?

On the phone last night, I told her to close the lid and put it away until I got there today.. about 15 times.. the missus was laughing her tits off at me trying not to flip out..

So she randomly clicked anything and everything, shut it down and restarted it many times and rang me back an hour later to tell me the problem was still there and read it out to me a few more times.

All the clean-up tools I have on my pc (and installed on hers) are on-demand..

did you end up headbutting the bum hicks?

Some physical retribution may have been dealt out had I turned off my hot button and remained cooler than a Jason Cool, son of Martha and Ralph Cool from Coolsville Arizona.

At one point she said that she had considered smashing it up and buying a new one..

I agreed that buying a new one wasn't entirely necessary but, instead of smashing the old one up (it was bought in December '09 ffs!!), she should box it back up and leave it out for the binmen (who don't come til tomorrow so I would be able to pick it up on my way to the truck and the world would be whole again
