"Future" retro

The smaller 'boutique' manufacturers will become sought after. The ones you have never heard of but turn out £*,*** frames from exotic materials.

Future Retro

Sorry to use the c word here but I believe that carbon will be king of the retros in the future.

I'll throw my hat into the ring and suggest the Cannondale Scalpel as the future retro bike that todays ten year olds will be saving to buy, [once they have paid up the mortgage].

In the meantime I'll squirt some more frame saver into the Kona. :D

IMO
Scott Scale Carbon models (LTD >35)
Shimano XTR
Santa Cruz DH bikes
DMR jump bikes (that are still around)
Fox forks
On One's (bikes, frames and parts)
Maxxis Tyres.
Service stuff for mid travel FS bikes (shocks, bearings, drop outs etc)

I think early runs/models of bikes will be future classics

I've got an early Charge steel Duster that I like to think will stand the test of time

Personally I think this is being over-thought.

You've only to look at this place, see some amazing work and builds (eg the Bear Valley, and the Proflex) to realise that future classics may well depend on how they're looked after and restored.

Well I have the Marzocchi RAC and Shimano Airlines covered already in my collection of bits and pieces.

Frame wise I'd say that something like a 2002 Turner RFX frame will become a bit of a future classic. They are already sought after frames now for their strength and adaptability to be run as anything between a 5" XC bike to a 7-8" freeride bike depending on the rocker you put on and the the fork you install.

Sure something like that is never going to be popular with the "if its not rigid its not retro" types but definitely a frame to be included on any futures list in my opinion.

Loads of people on here love Specialized's, Kona's, GT's etc which were and are mass produced and never boutique. Why will only boutiqe brands from today be retro classics in the future.

Its got nothing to do with exotica and price now !

Its what people will like then and often those people who are young now that will be collecting them not us

This thread strikes me as just another chance for us middle aged types to veiw the world from our own stick in the mud perspective

Someone will think Trek's are really cool and collectable from this era, I know many of you cannot accept this but I'm afraid its likely to be true

Future retro

Thanks Velo, I'm not middle aged just yet (30)!

The point of the thread was to try and side step the whole "only steel hardtails or rigid Kleins can be retro" thing that pervades the site to try and get peoples thoughts on tomorrows classics.

Up until a year or so ago I would've agreed that modern Treks would be just as desireable in a retro context in the future as their older stablemates (i.e. not), but in the last 18 months they've produced some amazing (and for once desireable) kit. Fuel or Session range, anyone?

Question is whether the current in vogue retro brands like Kona and GT will maintain their status down the track.... which I would say is doubtful on the strength of their current line ups.... My money is on Marin, Trek and Commencal coming to the fore.
