525

What was the theme of the article then? 525 is the most common rear triangle material in decent steel frames by far.

The jist was that 525 doesn't actually exist. It's badge engineering.

The factory that produces the majority of Cr-Mo for steel frames in the far east has a licensing deal with Reynolds. They'll sell you their standard steel tubeset or frame, or for an extra £5 they'll sell you their standard steel tubeset or frame and a sticker saying "Reynolds 525".

The other Reynolds tubings are "real" - it's just 525 that doesn't mean anything. So On-One do use that tubing, but they don't pay the extra £5 so it's not actually 525.

525

As far as I was aware, 525 and 520 were tube sets made by Reynolds specifically for seat and chain stays. They were designed to be built up with 631 653 and 825 831 and 853 main tubes. I believe 520 and 525 are not made in main tube sizes could the confusion be witrh 825 as GT made quite a few frames from that, same properties as 853, i.e stronger when heated but just a lower tensile strength. i also would have theough to be badged Reynolds it had to be Reynolds. I once had a Bravado Team Issue in 825 that had belonged to a GT sponsered female rider.

Tubing

Believe 525 is butted 520 rear triangle tubing, neither is nowhere near the strength of 631/653/825/853 so has to be thicker and therefore quite a bit heavier.
