All you need to do is tighten up the rear Qr a little bit more....

You can get eight speed screw on cassettes but you will need to use a seven/eight speed chain.

how would you get this to work on an MTB as opposed to a road bike??
is it to do with spacers?

Length of the axle is slightly shorter on a roadbike.

You could run this on an MTB as I said before - just need to squeeze the stays closer together with the QR a little more. Not a great option but it will work.

did they make that hub in MTB fitment or just road?

5mm difference, OLN(over lock nuts) size i.e. from locknut to locknut or space between the rear dropouts on a road bike is 130mm whilst a mtb is 135mm. Well thats my understanding anyway, though I think some older mtb's used the 130 std at the time. And hybrids and crossers use 135mm with 700c wheels.
