"Nice, but it is newer than you think."

Genuine Q: on what do you base that conclusion? Most of it (except for half instead of full chaincase) looks identical to a mid-50s Raleigh badged version that I had until recently. It COULD be early 50s to late '60s I guess, but the hub date should be conclusive?

Although British bikes started to lose a bit of their quality and were more cheaply finished, the design was pretty similar to the machines of before. The reason I'm guessing it's more modern are the 60s/70s SA lights and "continental" spoking, where both hubs are 36 hole instead of the better quality 32/40 system as used on British bikes before then. I don't think those plastic saddles were around in the 50s either.

"Hockey stick" chainguards were around in the 50s and earlier. My 1949 Raleigh has one.

Thing about SA 3 speed hubs is they are so reliable, it's fair to assume it's the same age as the bike. It'll be there, stamped XX YY where XX is year and YY is month.

Still cool though. 8)

Bumped and edited.
Can't see the date stamp clearly enough on the Sturmy, so have reflected unsurity of date in first post.
Best to pm any queries as I'm not in the habit of looking in the road section very often!
Peace,
Dave.
