I bloody hate it,its about the only thing i really struggle with
Chances are my sram X9 front mech may not be able to handle the 46-36 jump or that the mech is for 44t :? dont know exactly but its sure pisses me off :(

Anyone else have a pet hate on set up?[wheels excepted of course]

To the bike mechanic tomorrow. He can do it :D

Wee bit surprised to hear your are having such problems with it. Which one is it? What lever are you using? Could it maybe have had a knock so the cage is out? Chainline?

Of course if your mechanic is a mate, and you won't pay, then why not?

I can get mine to clear & shift fine, it just took some fettling to get the positioning right so it didn't clip the outer ring & so that the chain didn't run along the bottom of the cage if it was on the granny & any of the bottom 3 on the cassette.

to be honest, i prefer setting up front mech's to rears!

Front mechs are easier to set up if you do it before fitting the chain and the cable. Get the mech limit screws in the right position so the cage is centred over the outer and inner ring when at its limits.

All you have to do is fit the cable with the shifter and chain on the granny ring position with the slack taken out of the cable.

What i found easier was to put the shifter in middle, pull the mech out to sit where you want it for the middle ring & put a wedge in place (sram actually supply a wedge with some front mech's which is really handy). with the cable clamped tight, you can drop / raise the mech on the shifter then trim with the limit screws. It took me 30 seconds to setup the mech on the clockwork once i was happy with the cage position doing it this way, it won't suit everyone but it works for me!

One of the problems seems to be that the inner plate is catching on the middle ring :? If i set it a little higher then it seems too high up at the front :?

Unfortunately Willy is someone i know only in the work sense, well for at least 20yrsIE-the middle chainring priced at £20 he gives me it for 15.a bit cheaper on the servicing but not all the time and i wouldnt want him to.

Great for advice and advice on which lube/shock oil etc to use, reports on current parts what he sees most of etc.Good sound advice 8)

m thinking its the mech capacity, ill find out for sure tomorrow or friday.
Im pretty sure he looks in here occasionally :?

You can't just buckle like that. You know the protocol.

You need to at least take a couple of days to let all the 'engineers' troubleshoot it with you!

The thing I generally hate setting up is a bike for someone who doesn't know what is involved.

You know, when one of your 'mates' asks you because you are in the know, but then ignores everything you tell them, so they are back to you in three weeks.

I told Rico, who reads this even if he has not joined yet, that the reason i am not charging him money is that I expect he will be able to do it himself next time after I have shown him.

PS Does it foul on the middle once you slacken the cable off and move it manually, having relaxed the inner stop screw?

Yeah, silly you.

It is the RetroBike L.A.W.

...and I quote.

RetroBike L.A.W. 11. Sextion One Aye:

Thou Shelt No Proffer Yer Gubbins Tae Yon Cycle Shoppie Until Ye Haev Exhausted Pure Oot All Options Given By The RetroBike Grand Order. (i.e. Yon Pissheads Who Happen To Be Around When Ye Queries E' Site)

I will get it or ill find out why its not doing its job correctly.I have to buiuld strip re seal forks shocks and brakes so this simple mechanical device shant beat me.
Though i am beginning to think it is the capacity. :?

where are the Roadies when you need them

Ill keep bumping this and we can all laugh at the Heath Robinson approaches :D
