As per title. .

How easy (and how do I) modify a front mech into a chain guide?

Running 1 x 9 on the kids BSO and I'm going to need help keeping the chain on the 40T front ring...

I'll buy a 'proper' one asap but am skint for a couple of weeks...

tighten both screws as far down on the mech, with a stone or something holding it where you want it. and it should lock it. alternately, shorten the chain and it'll hold alot better

Ta matey. . .

The chain is already quite short but I'll see if I can whip another link or 15 out.. ;)

I would've just singlespeeded it but the lockring on my only remaining spacers is rounded off meaning they are, for the time being, firmly fitted to another wheel

Might twat it with the dremel again tomorrow. . . .

I modded a front mech into a chain guide for my DH bike back in the day. I cut the outside piece off the mech firstly. Then got 2 rectangle pieces of perspexs (spelling). Got 2 chain ring bolts (the outside part, not the bolt part), drilled 2 holes in the front mech, both on the inside shifting part thats left, one at the top/front and one at the rear/bottom. Drilled the perspex and bolted the perspex to the mech through the holes putting the chainring bolts in between the perspexs to allow the chain to run through it.
Hope this makes sense?
I have a photo of my bike with it on that i'll try and find.

Cool. Ta matey 8)
Think I have it now. Took a link out of tbe chain and re-done the spring in the rear mech (had previously took it out and hadn't put it back together properly  )
Just finished replacing the cables and put a new tube in the rear wheel.
#2 child will take it for a spin later and see what she thinks.

If all that's cool I just need a little (lot of) luck on some v.cheap half decent forks.. . 8)

when i bust my front shifter one time, i shoved a bolt through the gap in the parallel bars in the front mech to keep it in middle gear. No damage or mod needed to the mech

Just use the adjusster screws to set in the right place, simples. Ran one like this for a few months on my commuter 'till I found a left hand thumbie.
