some cheap shimano front mechs use the bb and have a bent bit of steel to rest around the seat tube to stop it spinning instead of the bolt idea.

In a round about way thats what the Gary Fisher has - but its a lot neater than it sounds!


however I think the mech Anthony has a pic of is an evolution of this
:? design and requires bolting the mech to the ST to stop it rotating.

Question answered - conventional mech it is!

Stick with a conventional front mech if your frame isn't designed for it. Otherwise you're limited to bb choices. You also can't get subtle adjustments like pointing the tail in/out slightly, height, different chainring sizes,etc
