Freehub question

Hello guys,

I have decided to replace freehub on my shimano 600 hubs so I can use my new shimano 600 STIs which are 2x8 (I currently have 2x7 on bike).
The hubs have 7speed freehub on them now. Can anyone tell me where to look for nice 8-9 speed freehub that will fit these hubs? Any suggestions regarding quality and weight?
Maybe you can post few links?

I have found several options on evanscycles, all for 9 speed and all shimanos and all with different prices, and that is what made me first ask for suggestions here.

nearly all shimano freehubs fit on the same splined interface, it's just a question of the seals and cones and how they interface to the hub.

Might be worth getting a cheap donor hub, although getting the freehub off an unbuilt hub is a challenge of its own.

Thank you both for replying.

I know how to remove and install it, I am just worried about quality and compatibility.

so regarding splines on the left/inner side of freehub it is all pretty much the same, how can I be sure if it will fit seals and cone I already have. Has anyone actually did this with this exact hub?

I have done this exact modification. I bought a little used RS30 hub off eBay for about £6, and took the freehub off, I used the drive side cone as well, to ensure the seals would match, then re-spaced the hub to suit. The wheel did need a little more dish, but not much.

So you believe any shimano hub freewheel should fit on the this hub?

Re:

I'm not saying that every freehub mounting is the same, but other than some old 600AX hubs I have, all the others have been the same mounting. You just need an 8, 9 or 10 speed freehub (all the same width) and you should be good to go.

OK than I understood you! Thank you very much for you have been very helpful.
When I make transplatation I will report results here.

Just wanted to report here that I finished successful transplantation of freehub ;)
It is working wonderfuly; I used RS10 Shimano Freehub, added one more spacer to drive side of hub, did not use any spacers on leftside, redished the wheel and done!
