The Fusion is blue not silver? The hub is in a nice wheel set so i bit reluctant to strip it all down, I shall bear that in mind though as a last resort.

Blue, then it's 1998 model
has black forks with a silver band

wheels ar Sun CR-18, DT Champion spokes (striaght gauge) on to Alivio hubs, which if i remember correctly will still be FH-R050

They might look nice, but not brilliant wheels ;)

The free hub body (part the cogs sit on) which is the part that has locked up and do lock up, unless they can degrease and clean it to get it working is a very expensive for what it is. (accoring to the price shops are showing) replacment. When in fact you can get a better wheel for the same price new or second hand on here.

Fusion

It is Blue with Rock shocks which are grey not black The old wheels are long gone so i have added mavics but kept the old hubs. I bought it from new I could of sworn I bought it in 97 could it be older??

Now if it is a cassette hub then I believe there are 2 ways of holding the cassette onto the body, the more common lock ring which is where the internal diameter of the cassette body is threaded, the cassette is slid onto the splined section and a lock ring screws into the threaded internal diameter of the body.

The second type is not used thesedays and relies on the external diameter of the cassette body being threaded, and the smallest gear screws onto it compacting the rest of the set onto the splined section.

Without more info from you it will be difficult to ID.

To be honest I would probably go for the complete new rear wheel. By the sounds of it your current ones have served you well, but are not of the sort of quality that is worth spending too much time/money in restoring, when a better wheel can be had for probably less money.

i had a silent clutch rear wheel, i ditched it when i split the rim avoiding a renault clio.

i do remember the hub having its own gravity field though - i'd go with the "new wheel" group

I have just had my bike shop back on the phone they have never seen one like it. Pants. I shall get the hub back and post a picture of it on here.
I would love to be able to keep the bike as close to original as possible.

Yellow decals? then it's 1996 model

and FH-R050 is still the only 'clutch' type and STX/Alivio level
