Fozen hard Mud is as good as baked hard Mud- Discuss

So I went out for my daily Rag this moring and after 3 months of riding in sloppy mud every day - what a treat. I was able to go flat out everywhere and didnt flick up one splash of mud and had perfect grip.

We dont have any snow to speak of and at -5 the ground is rock hard!

Anyone else appreciating this?

Nope.
That frozen puddle you hit that makes your front wheel dart for the bottom of the nearest hedge as you, separated from your bike, slide down the jagged, frozen solid, icy mud and turn your extremeties into something that would look more at home at the butchers.

I've done it more than once. It's probably one of the least pleasant experiences i've had on an MTB.

Meeee! There's a good layer of the white stuff this morning, but there's been a few good solid frozen days. I really enjoy the local trails mud free and I'm faster on a good frost, with the major positives of staying clean!

Its so dry here that all my usual puddles are gone!

Must be freaky conditions - I still cant belive I was honking uphill in big ring this morning.

Re:

Yeh I think I agree on this one, went out on Saturday morning running some errands, and was able to shun the roads and cut through all the major dog poo / muddy routes on my commuter (running slicks) with laden panniers without so much as a near-miss or splatter of mud.

I was a happy chappy when I returned home.

The problem I find is that the muddy tracks get all cut up while wet and boggy, then freeze solid. So, makes for a far less smooth ride than in the summer when the tracks become smoother again.

Coming off on frozen rutted mud hurts like hell!

It's minus 13° in the morning, I was riding to work. My face is trying to fall off, my eyes are tearing, my beard is all crusty white and I can't feel my fingers any more. What's not to like? :D

Ok, when you get to places where many footprints are frozen solid, that's rather unpleasant. And those nasty places, where surface water has frozen to a thick layer of ice. One can barely walk across. A bit of an annoyance. But still: It's something different. Your daily road turnes into something else. The sent of adventure...

Re:

I discovered round profiled dirt tyres are not appropriate for frozen hardpack or road covered by ice with a top dusting of powdery snow on top of compacted snow polished up by motorists... ow.
