Just battled around Glentress, my usual stomping ground, on my newly aquired 91 Stumpjumper. Best riding rigid bike I have ever owned, encourages you to race around and try and keep up with those in front of you.

Unfortunately Glentress is very rocky, rutted and tree rooted with steep hills which results in you getting very beat up on a rigid bike. This is less of an issue on my older sit up and beg style mtb's but with the stumpy's committed XC ride position my arms and back take a pounding.

So here is the question, what Suspension fork will fit a 91 Stumpjumper and how easy/difficult is it to get hold of one ?

I imagine 50mm or less suspension is what is required to not mess up the bikes geometry and I do already have a Girvin Flexstem which I plan to add to the mix for a bit more travel.

Thanks for help and advice you all may offer.

Cheers

it's a bit late, timewise, but a Mag 21 offers 48mm of travel. that's as much as i'd fit on a bike of that era.

Marazochi made their first forks around then, my make rated them highly but they weighed a bit more than Mag21's - I bought my Mag21's around 91/92 from Edinburgh Bike Coop so they aren't that far off the mark.

Stumpy 91 RC35s

I had a similar Stumpy with Suntour kit on it, which I got at the end of 1991, fast fwd to summer time 1992 and the flouro yellow flex stem is ditched for some PACE RC35s...

They were / are ace (although the elastomers go a bit wierd in extreme temps). Even got to ride them in the Apls one summer.
You can even still get spares via a helpful fella called Tim @ 'Fork English'

Keep an eye on the for sale section, they appear from time to time.
