Football Chants

Seems that football chants are to be moderated in future Scotland.

I am all for it, and hope this is just the start. We pushed racism out of the game, now it is time to mop up the rest of the haters.

Could not be more chilled! Just admiring the amazing forethought of Alex Salmond.

There is only one way the SNP could move the argument forward for their party, and Westminster is playing right into their hands.

Historically all civil rights movements have culminated in legislation supporting their aims, we are seeing this now with the anti-sectarian movement.

That is a beautiful thing, and leads one to a calm state of mind, something great is afoot.

Life is politics, and every last thing relating to it is political in nature.

Most of the comedy I enjoy is intensely political. Stewart Lee anyone? Alexei Sayle? Bernard Cribbins?

Racism is not in this conversation, except as an example of something we pushed out of football.

That was a big, big deal.

Should be proudly remembered.

:)

Can't you remember any of their jokes then?
FFS, lighten up.

Suprisingly I agree with flyer

Scottish football has never really left the 70's in the same we we used to tolerate the NF at games, mass bundles with firms like the intercity crew it was time to move on from the thuggery that prevents it being a familly game

sectarian violence at a game if you have ever experienced it..not something to lighten up about

This last event shamed scottish football and reflected badly on Scotland and perhaps that's what it needed and I'm glad they are making changes

an example to end with if I may

your out with your kids and fancy a pub lunch..two pubs next to each other

do you go in the one with fights and racist taunts..or the one that outlaws those and makes famillies welcome and safe?

As a season ticket holder at a Scottish ground I'd be delighted to see the end of the sectarian nonsense. Which event in particular are you talking about Sylus?

mostly around lennon and the bombs etc taz

yes he does himself no favours but if it was only him..i doubt the scottish parliment would be involved

The whole Lennon situation is a tricky one. It is too simplistic to say it is purely because he is a catholic from Ulster. Martin O'Neil never received the same abuse.

The sectarian nature of chanting is less than it used to be a few years ago where it was the norm at a number of grounds. What this does it make it more noticeable when it does happen. There is a defence mounted by the Celtic fans that they don't indulge in it and they are only singing songs linked to their history and heritage as Irishmen. And the rather bizarre belief that they need to join the EPL to get away from the Scottish league. Happily missing the fact that I don't believe several thousand of them singing pro IRA songs wouldn't go down too well in London, Manchester etc that suffered from bombing campaigns in the 70's and 80's.

The only way it can be eradicated is by changes in general society. The way it is being reported now makes Scotland sound like a country where sectarianism is the norm and blights the whole country, this is patently not the case any more. My club has a small problem with a few idiots but we are being tanned with the same brush as Rangers and Celtic. If anyone attended a few of our games they would see that these idiots are only heard when we play against Celtic, and indeed some of them only seem to attend these games. The Old Firm however happily sing their songs against any opposition.

Celtic and Rangers in my opinion have been guilty of playing up to this side of their history as it keeps the fans happy (or a % of them).

I thought this wa going to be a thread on the best/funniest football chants...
cant we do that instead?
I'll try and get it rolling..

''Park Ji wherever you may be..
You eat dogs in your own country..
But it could be worse, you could be scouse..
Eating dead rats in your council house!''

Perhaps not one of the best, but made me chuckle. No offense implied!

Hmmm... Right. Firstly the "English Premier League" is the Premier League, partly because there is now a welsh side in it and also just like the Football Association is called that, the Premier League is.

As for Rangers and Celtic joining the English leagues, they would have to join at the bottom just like Accrington, Aldershot, AFC Wimbledon and FC United have.

Sectarianism is racism and there's no place for it in normal life let alone football which is merely a game.

Finally, an amusing ditty...

The classic United song based on Joy Division that went , "Giggs, Giggs will tear you apart again" has turned into "Giggs, Giggs will shag a welsh tart again..."
