Ive found .myself more and more thinking about fly fishing
So much so i went out and sorted out myself with the kit primarily a rod ( a wilderness 9'6" XT , guess what caught my eye. .. ) and as we're near the end of season im just picking up short permits and license.
It was something that was said on episode 1 of the new series of Mortimer and Whitehouse go fishing, it struck a chord within me. Earlier this year i lost my dad, also one of my closest friends Will just before Christmas and in general ive found myself returning to paddle my kayaks or canoes along the Eastern Cleddau for many years , thinking about it i first paddled it in 2001 in my old Coleman 17, but most notably when i just need head space.
I paddled the tidal reaches of the Eastern Cleddau yesterday fishing and having never caught a thing on it before i landed 5 bass, my first ever Bass !! A much needed 8 hours of canoeing.
The river is becoming a bit special to me, the estuarine smell and the clink of the yacht rigging as they lay on their moorings take me back to childhood with dad and sounds of Porthmadog with mum.
The hospital that dad died in is was the old naval hospital in Pembroke dock right close to the water, unfortunately he couldn't see the water but on that first morning without him i stood on the dockside watching the day break and all the seagulls circle in the cold air above me.
Old sailors go to the west and fly the salted air.
So, back to fishing and biking.
I live ten minutes bike ride from the freshwater part of the Eastern Cleddau along a roman road, a amazing creel basket fits nicely on the pannier rack of the Crossfell ( bought months ago from a charity shop, creel not bike ) and the rod in it's tube no doubt strapped to the tube.
Btw Dan and i are working together to bring in some really special bike luggage to the UK which means im likely to give up using panniers altogether.
