Fixing up an Orange C16R

I'm going to try and fix up my old Orange for commuting / occasional hard-tail mtb fun. Commuting on a Marin Mount Vision is not terribly sensible!

The whole groupset (STX-RC) on the C16 is knackered, I've been thinking that I'll replace it all with a new LX groupset: (http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/?fn=product&productId=287&categoryId=83)

Will the v-brakes work fine on the old canti mounts?

The rear wheel will need rebuilding with a 9 speed hub, does anyone know of somewhere in the Manchester area that will build a wheel at a decent price?

There's a lot of play in the headset as well, any recommendations on where to find a 1" threaded headset from these days?

Is there anything else I haven't thought of?

Hi mate,

V brakes will work fine on the original bosses

Sprockets do a nice cheap 1" threaded headset..

There are a few wheel builders on here,try asking about if anyone will be willing to build you a wheel,cake always helps

You can't go wrong with merlin for groupsets and stuff, that price is just crazy (NB the modern deore is quality too). For wheels merlin are IMO the best around too. They're rebuilding a set for me at moment at a cost of £40 labour for the pair!

Wow, that is a good price!!! I must have easy spent that on 21 speed kit, new and old scuffed stuff scavenged from all over. New FTW

That's a fantastic price on that groupset :shock: . Go for it, but be quick; I can't see them being on sale at that price for long.

You'll need some new tools to put the BB on though.

Also when you get it could you list all the parts, I sent a few email asking questions to what it actually is (i.e what front mech etc)

The only downside of that groupset is the Dual control levers/shifter, though I might still buy it for a commuter one of my bikes.

As for wheels, just buy either the

But you can pick up a pair of handbuild Mavic XM317, DB spokes and Deore hubs (lx slightly more)
