Well I've been running two of mine with no lockring for well over a year and I've not had trouble with either of them unscrewing. One is a chrome flip-flop hub on a 27" wheel with 52/18 gearing and the other is an alloy single-speed hub on a shopper bike with 42/13 gearing. Both were tightened by winding the cog on and stomping the pedals.titch__16":3v3fz50r said:I'll tell you what I have then. Geared wheel, sprocket, BB lockring and the ability to build wheels. My only concern is that people keep mentioning possible dangers with using a standard freewheel hub of the sprocket coming off. Therefore if I was able to find a very cheap hub or set, I would be safer.
The only one I've had come loose was a brand new track hub with a brand new greased chrome cog which I did up with a whip. I reckon the combination of all the surfaces still being new and shiny and a bit of grease caused it.
You'll never get it undone using your leg strength to brake with 53/13 gearing though.
