i seem to recall someone on here who'd worked out how to modify a modern dual pivot caliper to fit older frames

i've had a search but i cant find it

You can drill-out the back of the forks / brake bridge to accept the larger diameter allen nut. Getting to the back of the rear bridge can be tricky.

Yup you can drill the fork with a 10mm drill bit (iirc) and also the rear brake bridge (you need an angle drill) or on the rear brake you can replace the centre bolt with that from a front brake which will then extend all the way through the bridge. Personally I'd just drill it or buy brakes that will fit.

does anyone have any feedback on this? I about to drill holes into my precious bike...
I don't have an angled drill either...
any help much appreciated..

You dont need an angled drill. The forks are easy. For the rear hole, drill right through from the back and then get a bit of metal tube to "fill" the slack on the part nearest the back, if that makes sense. Done it many a time no probs

I think i get it...

the old weinmann bolt is 6mm as is the current hole in the frame.. The new(ish) calipers Im fitting have a 6mm bolt and a 8mm sleeved allen key bolt thing with a 10mm lip at the end...

If I drill an 8mm hole through my frame (!) then I will need to find a sleeve to go from the 6m bolt to the new 8mm hole (at the caliper end of the bolt)..

Otherwise it will rattle around I guess....

Nice solution.. I just need to find a 6mm metal tube.. The bolt might actually be long enough to make it up..

have I got this right?

I don't know why but I feel nervous drilling into my frame...

thanks for your help.

Yep, thats right. If its a steel frame, no need to be nervous. Finding a small length of sleeve might be the hardest bit.

Ah 8mm hole. I've drilled all the way through the brake bridge before and used the recess fitting of the brake as the sleeve which fitted snuggly and when done up tight kept the brake in place fine.
