Fitting BB7

The break thing....Drives me mad  Ebay is full of Illiterati

Agree, but there are plenty on here that can't spell brake either. And that is worse. Nor do they know the difference between "there" , "their" and "they're".
Perhaps it is a generation of texters. Or maybe they should have paid more attention at school.

But, to ( is that two or even too) answer your question. 160mm will be fine. I have used 185 and 203's with my bb7 on the front of my stumpy. The 203 just looks stupid.
160 rotor and a carefully set up bb7 is a great braking combo. I use an xtr v on the rear. Don't waste your money putting one on the back.

No reason i can see for not using a 185 rotor :?
Bombers can take it as can modern rigid forks,so i'd think a sid can handle it just as well

Dont think its necessary on a XC bike. Looks a bit odd too. A well set up brake on a 160mm rotor is plenty powerfull.

Nice Stumpjumper...really clean! I had an M2 stumpy S works myself in that horrific green color (came stock with red forks). I actually wish I could find another in that color. Those are great handling bikes that can be built-up into an ultra light XC trail runner. Sounds like thats your plan with the Middleburn duo set-up.

The sids are great forks, but they do have a tendency to twist easier and aren't nearly as torisionally rigid as a Marzocchi Z2 Bomber. A 185 up front might possibly exacerbate that twisting problem as the BB7's are extremely powerful brakes. I have used BB7's in 160/160 and 160/185 configurations. Both work great and for an XC bike I would save the added weight and stick to 160/160. In fact I just sold a set of Avid Ultimate hydro discs and I am waiting on the delivery of a new set of 160/160 BB7's myself.

Keep us posted on the bike!

Many thanks for your interest and advice people :D All gratefully recieved, needed & appreciated.

Well I got a great deal on a BB7 caliper & 185 disc plus a pair of rather nice Avid Speed Dial SL levers.

It'll be an XTR v on the back, I agree with the cost & non frame surgery views.

Looking at my list I reckon all I need is bottom bracket, little bb cable guide, seat clamp, chain (I do have a rather lovely Dura Ace 10 spd one. Will it work?), tyres and then cables & white outers. Getting there Mike!!!

So what tyres guys? Oh and another Ebay spelling fave PEDDLES :D

Looks a bit odd too

185/160mm is the standard set up  Always has been.
160/160mm is more likely to cause the rear end to lock up,the rotors really should be different sizes with the larger on the front.

Hi Dyna.

All I'm saying is in my opinion 185 is fairly big and looks out of place on XC bike. Besides, the extra rotor size just isnt necessary, especially with a good performing brake like the BB7. Maybe if the bike was being built for a more "AM" purpose then 185mm would be a better choice. For this build my view is that a 160mm will give more than enough braking power, weigh less, and be more 'in proportion' with the rest of the bike.
