fitting bars!

Is there a better way of sliding flat bars through a stem, than opening up the clamp near the bolt?

Is there a best way of fitting the bars, without scratching them?

any advice would be appreciated.

A smidge of grease or hairspray can help.  Hairspray also works well on grips, as it provides lube to start and then dries sticky.

just put the bolt the other way round with a 2p coin on the other side , it will allow you to open the clamp .

Take out the clamp bolts and screw them in from the back, place a 2p (or even a 10p if your rich) between the clampjaws and gently 'jack' open the clamp. Doesn't need much mind, just a bit of extra clearance.

Many thanks guys!! retrobike forum comes up with the goods again!

p.s in my defence I had just come in from work and was dog tired as I was faffing about with these bars! schoolboy error though.
