fitting a 1" quil stem to a 1,1/4" oversize headset also for quil stems.

Does anyone know of any shim or adapter system that will allow me to fit a 1" set of bullmoose bars with a quil to the 1.25" oversize quil headset on a Fisher I have acquired?

I've never heard of something like that. The only way I can think of something working like that would be a sleeve like the bottom of a Cinelli road stem and it would only work with a stem with a wedge like that. I don't think it would work safely with the style that's the diagonal sliced wedge type of stem. Even stress relieved with a circle at the top of the slice, I'd also be afraid of it cracking like the french AVA death stems did. There'd only be a 1/8th inch of material on both sides the wedge split. And it would be a pain to remove from the steerer to go back to a 1.25 stem. Imagine if it got rusted in the steerer from lack of grease...

Just my two cents... I'm not an engineer though. So maybe there's something I'm not thinking of.

Thanks for your thoughts, yes, its an interesting conondrum - I guess might be just as easy to chop the 1" quil off and weld a 1,14" quil on - but its all to do with: a) can it be done without ruining the bars, b) will it be safe to ride.

I thought someone out there might say "sure, see this 1/8" shim insert you can get with slots cut in the bottom so the 1" expanding wedge still works".

That's what I'm thinking - and with a series of cuts around the base extending up as far as the 1" expanding wedge moves to (so that the shim can 'fan-out' and grip as the expanding wedge moves)

As Junonada says - beware or corrosion and seized components some a coating of something like copper-ease might be an idea on all sides of the parts being inserted.

Its not something that I will be doing until later in Aug. when I get hold of that particular project bike and parts - but I will be sure to post on here how I get on as a follow-up.

Thanks for giving it some though.
