Fed up and in pain

For a while now I've thought that if I ever won the lottery I'd have my body sorted out , like Burns does in the simpsons

What kind of costs would be involved with a sports physio ?

I had a brief girlfriend a few years ago that was a pretty good massage , was surprised how good it felt after she pulled me about , the cracks and pops sounded scary though .

Depends, I think I paid £30 a session for a regular Physio

Arthritis can set in within a year.. and it doesn't necessarily require an injury.

I have arthritis pretty much from the big toe on my right foot into the ankle..
And in all my fingers, both shoulders, 1 of my elbows, both knees...

Had an arthroscopy on my ankle a couple of years ago.. that helped for a while ('til the regrowth)..

Advil Extra is much better than Ibuprofen in my experience (although not as widely available)..

Get yerself to a (good) neuro physio!! I doubt its traumatic osteoarthritis if you had symptoms within a week of the crash. It sounds a bit more like some sort of neural tension problem, possibly a chronic form of whiplash or something like that, where the nerves that run down your arm into your hand are being pinched somewhere and not moving as well as they should. A neuro physio will do some (really painful - sorry) neural tension testing and should be able to get you sorted properly, correcting neural tension problems would usually take a couple of months and involve regular stretching with your arm bent in some crazy positions....

Way back in September whilst at the Peaks meet I came off. Nothing dramatic, front wheel went down a little drop and instead of me being able to roll through the bike just stopped and I went over the bars. Natural reaction is to stick your arms out.....and I did  Thanks to Wu-Tangled for picking me up, dusting me down and not taking the p15s!

Anyway, no real pain until a week or so later when making a coffee and almost dropping the kettle due to shooting pains across my hand and thumb. This continued, I moaned and the wife packed me off to the doc's who referred me immediately for an x-ray. The hospital found nothing :?

So.....I tried to ignore the sharp shooting pains, which over time have stopped but now become a regular, frequent dull ache. The wife kindly brought me a wrist support which I now wear every evening, because by the time I get home I am in agony.

I should have worn my support for the Alconbury ride, bloody forgot it, but by the end of the ride my wrist was screaming

For the last week I have been woken up by the dull throb in the middle of the night, and today (well, at about 2.30am) decided to go back to the doc's.

And do you know what he suspects it is?

Arthritis

Brought on by the fall! I am in shock.

Anyway, I will have to wait for further tests at the hospital having been referred for an appointment, along with physio.

The only pain relief I can get now are some ibuprofen tablets the doc recommends. They are the size of horse pills! Still, seem to be working as by now I am normally wincing.

Hey ho......

He's discounted a Brachial or Ulnar nerve problem?

Andy

Ironic, isn't it? It's the slow 'offs' that are complicated.

I February 2009, I had a 1mph off in ice at 7.45am and thought I'd got away with it. Only started hurting at 5pm that day.

Now some 18 months later, I'm on a waiting list for micro surgery to a bone in my shoulder that has allowed me to go all this time without a decent nights sleep! :(

Hope things pick up for you, Pickle. 8)

Sounds more like its medial nerve distribution. Thumb and fingers. And if you think about picking up a kettle, it's the muscles like flexor carpi radialis innervated by the median nerve that are being recruited.

I guess the easiest way to find out is to get Pickle to stand side on to a wall, hold his shoulder down with the unaffected hand, then stretch out so his (locked out at the elbow) arm is at right angles to his body, palm flat against the wall and hand pointing backwards.

I predict pain.

This is also probably the stretch that the physio would be recommending if it is a median nerve problem...

i had a couple of tumbles at the peaks too lol , pretty sure i fractured one of my little fingers still give me jip from time to time.

paracetomol ease the pain, ibuprofen ease any swelling.id go to the chiropractor, theye fantastic and sorted all my little and large, including a proper fekd back problem.do it before it gets worse and cost a fortune and your sanity :D

i agree with the chiropractor comment i wouldn't be riding now if it wasn't for the chiro i see.

Wimp!

I broke my collarbone in March. Didn't find out until June what I had done. Seriously get it looked at by a chiropractor NOT a physio.

my above comment about the chiro wasnt to do with the finger ;)

i screwed my knee up quite seriously about 6 years ago, i struggled to walk let alone cycle. spent the years following the incident in the hands of the NHS who after 4 years of Xrays, MRIs & exploratative keyhole surgery still had no clue as to what i'd done.
