Fat Chance info wanted

FATs do not have a rust issue. They rust when there isn't properly taken care of them.

No covering online?! Hmmm... Here you go! =>

OH YES THEY DO

I know of no other make of frame that rusts inside to out,so they DO have a rust problem.I worked with bikes from the fifties in the shop which have never had the post removed or any type of antirustgoostickystuff put in and no rust

How many people think it`s correct that you HAVE to put frame saver in a steel frame so it lives longer, mine now has what it should of had from the start and thats a hole connecting the bb to the seat tube

i've seen yetis have the exact same problem. the nickel plated rusted marins rusted inside to out (the steel sweats & rusts.
you were unlucky dude. FATs have got a bad, in my mind ill deserved rep thru rust, yeh they shouldnt have sealed the breather holes, woulda helped a lot. but they're not the only people who did this!

My Serotta made Yo has a hole from seat tube to BB from the start.

Other frames:
Grove Hard Core => closed seat tube
WTB Phoenix => closed seat tube
Yeti ProFRO => closed seat tube
Serotta T-Max => closed seat tube

Only bikes in my stable with proper ventilation are the Miyatas and Panasonics.

Good example of proper ventilated bike  =>

To me it sounds logical that blank steel, less than 1mm thick in a non ventilated area will rust through eventually. Drilling vent holes will help, but would not do that solely. I have more faith in that proper surface threatment, preferably with quality rust prevention greases and oils is more effective.

personally I take my seatpost out and turn my bike upside down after a wet ride but hey thats just me.

extremely sensible... i'm normally so wasted i'd never remeber

Dont think fats deserve this "reputation" at all. Yes the tubes are sealed causing condensation but lets get a little perspective here.

Steel rusts! If you dont like that dont buy a steel bike! Theres always ti? Or carbon :D

Did chris chance (or any other frame builder) really forsee that people would still be riding these things after almost 20 years? Would have thought that they were meant to race for a season or two and be replaced?

Imo rust should never be a reason not to buy a steel bike. Rust can be prevented very easily.

No idea whether intended his bikes for 20 years use. Think an average rider won't trash a proper steel in 20 years. We can be more sure on that nowadays bikes aren't intended for 20 years. Of course the industry self don't care much about that.

so answer to your question matey is that yes afew fat chances have been know to rust at the base of the seat tube, and even crack, but this can be repaired and prevented if noticed in time.
so dont let a bit of rust put you of buying a fat chance,it`ll be the best ride of your life

Thanks! I'll be doing that! Are these decals year correct for this frame set???

Stavros,

Drop me a line at the web site and I'll get you sorted.

The decals are sold only to members who register their Fats with the Fat Cogs site and are not subject to resale. I sell the decals at my cost to the community to get more classic steel back on the dirt.

As for the ebay auction...

This is the second time that David Hughes has violated my user agreement by selling my decals on Ebay for a profit. I've contacted him before as well as this time and my correspondance has been ignored until the auction ends and then he pleads ignorance. The man is morally berift and should have his Ebay user rights revoked, a process I will make a dedicated effort to achieving.

cheers,

rody
