Hey folks, I'm playing with the idea of a fat bike. I'm thinking about going with a cheapo one to start off with (coyote fatman) yes I know it's cheap but I don't want to sink good money in and then realise I don't really like it. Has anyone got a coyote if so is it ok? I think if I do end up liking the whole fat bike thing I'd go on-one? Cheers Rob

At 22kg (46lbs) i can guarantee that you will hate it. it has a nasty high tensile steel frame, poor components and must be hard work on any gradient. it is frankly a £100 Tesco bike with trendy fat tyres.
I would look for something secondhand instead of this lookalike. Fat bikes need specialised bits and there are no cheap short cuts.

Ahh yeah, that's rather heavy. I may have a look at a few places to see if they have fat bikes for hire, if I could take one out to see what I think? Like I say I'm just worried if I put money down on a one that I'm not going to like it. I may just avoid the coyote!

There was an on one for Sale when I wasn't looking for one near me, he wanted around the £600 mark. I've also been looking at the likes of voodoo, yes halfords! Or the calibre dune?

i believe the wazoo is at £399 too at the minute. i reckon with some upgrades it could be alright? ive gkt some v12 mags and a Bel air saddle, which i could put on- let tbe weight saving begin. haha

If I'm honest I'm useless at leaving things standard to I reckon I would upgrade bits at some point. It might be worth a look to halfords at some point, I'm going to do plenty of research on the whole thing first.

The Coyote has non-standard hub widths so is effectively non-upgradeable. They are solid axles and IIRC it even has a screw-on freewheel, which gives an indication how bargain-basement it really is. Note the chainset is WAY too big, so that would have to be swapped immediately for anything more than nipping out for a packet of Marlboro at Tesco Express.

There seem to be a fair few On-Ones coming up secondhand, probably a good place to start although hiring and trying first is definitely best!

I have been in doubt about a Fatty for quite some time... then last year I ended up getting a full carbon Carver O'Beast. While building the bike all that went through my head was "God, I hope this isn't money down the drain" (since I went with all carbon RF Next parts etc).

One year later: all of my retro bikes are for sale and the Carver is all I've ridden since octember last year when it was finished. I even went from 2x11 to 1x11 two months ago (with Wolf Tooth front ring) as I was very afraid that going from 3x7 with big rings to 1x11 with something 32T front and 10-42 rear was not for me.

Bottom line I love it!! ;-) Just my two cents...

I think the next time I have a chance to go to halfords I'll have a look at the wazoo I think, don't think I'll come away with one though.

Well I'm going to go outdoors tomorrow to have a look at the calibre dune, wether I'll come away with one, I don't know yet.
