Having read some of legrandfromage's threads showing loads of great tip finds (and the fact I had a boot load of cr@p to take to the dump) thought i'd check out my local household waste recyling centre.
All the good stuff ends up in the recycling shop - they had a load of bikes. 99% were Halfords specials apart from one....a mid 70s lugged 531 Viner with full Dura Ace. Only problem was the tip monkeys wouldn't let me buy it or take it. Apparently some 'mechanics' come in once a week to check them over prior to sale under Council orders (yeah, right  ). Can only assume said mechanics will recognize a quality item and take it for themselves OR (more likely) they'll be chimps from Halfords and send it to the crusher :(
Still, have another boot load of rubbish to take tomorrow so will try again....

Good luck, hope you are lucky this time, maybe ask some tips from legrandfromage, lol :)

Indeed. Maybe I could get some tip tips.

I'll be going now...

It's a health and safety issue. They can't sell a bike for it to crumble under you as you can then sue them. Same reason why companies can't give old computers to the local school, just in case they blow up and burn the place down.

Offer to sign a disclaimer stating that you are buying it for scrap (and offer them a tenner each)

The guys at the Bishopbriggs tip obviously don't think too highly of health and safety as they actually have a wee area next to their shed of "things people might want". I managed to score myself a 1980 dawes galaxy for "2 quid...enough for some t-bags". :)

Unfortunately upon closer inspection at home the forks are bent and some idiot has let the rear tyre wear through the drive side chainstay. Still I'll keep the parts for a nice fixie conversion.
