didnt the americans drop letters from our language, cuz they thought the letter where pointless, in about the 1800's there was a revolution in the schooling system, and a little green book of the teaching of the language was a big success, (our cousins across the pond could confirm this) and also in the 1400's when our english was standardized a lot of the language was spelt phonetically but the activists still persuaded those in charge to have some letters left in, at one point there where about 12 ways of spelling the word church.
