Extending a Steerer Tube

Hello good people of RB,

I have been in touch with a fabricator (Mercian Bikes in this case) and have also tried to contact Chas Roberts about extendnig the steerer tube i have on a '99 RS SID fork.

The chap at Mercian said that this is something they should be able to do, but I should speak to the suspension guy (Carl) to double check. JustKev said that this is possible, and I have seen a clip on youtube of someone doing a stand up job of it, but this is an alu steerer and I suspect that the steerers that have been extended are steel.

I have seen many people on here sharing engineering knowledge so want to know your thoughts on this.

Thanks

Dan

I think the video could be one of Rody's (Groovy cycles) and is indeed a steel steerer.

Thats the chap! I thought it might be steel. Come to think of it, he may have said that. I have a cold and was drifting in and out of a Calpol trance when I saw it!!!

Thoughts on extending a SID alu steerer though :?

It might be an idea to contact a small engineering shop rather than a builder. Alloy repairs and alloy welding isn't really in the UK builders arsenal.

Hmmm, good idea. I am in no rush to get this done, more establish whether someone in the UK can indeed carry out this work and, if so, for how much.

Could you recommend someone of that ilk that you may have had experience with or know someone that has had experience with a small engineering firm?

There's a couple of Motorbike/custom engineers over in Farnham who I believe could assist. Forgotten the names though...

That would be ideal! Mercian have now got back to me and said they cannot fabricate an extension onto the forks, but can replace the steerer/crown assembly for the princely sum of £250 by sourcing a replacement from SRAM who import the rockshox bits

It's a good fork, but not that good I would spend that much on a 12 year old unit!

I you remember the names of the companies suburbanreuben, that would be ace!

Since a majority of the work is machining what about mikee or broady or elite?
