Ever tried closing a Hotmail account?

I've had one since 2002 but it has reached the point of obscelence and I wish to remove all trace of my identity from Microsofts various online services. However, having tried to do so I was told I had a subscription based account and could not delete it until I'd ended my subscription. Initially I thought it may have referred to a defunct XBOX Live account, but I don't have an active subscription there. I believe it may relate to my Hotmail account as I vaguely recall that they changed their terms a few years back and anyone with an existing account automatically recieved an account status that new subscribers would need to pay for i.e. they classify my acccount as subscription based, but I pay nothing. I was unable to even find an email address to request help, so have had to post on Microsoft forum in the hope someone who can actually access my account reads it.

a while ago my sister had no internet acces for just over a month, her personal email is a hotmail.co.uk address, after a month of not logging in it had closed itself due to lack of use. so i just assumed they close automatically if you don't use them.

Something I read in the merry-go-round of trying to find the delete button said that your account isn't deleted but remains dormant. It possibly will delete after 270 days (?) but having a Hotmail login now means so much more than your email; I now have a 'Windows Live' profile that I never asked for, which gives me access to dozens of Microsoft services I don't want.

yeah they have "upgreage" hotmail again today, its changed ever so slightly and is really not making me happy (also being very very slow at times).

Just leaving them doesn't delete them, thats how last year someone hacked into twitter or something, hacker did the old reset password, told them it has been sent to your hotmail account, they reactivate it, bingo (may not have been that simplified, but you get the idea).

Yeah, the forced acceptance of T&C's today was the final straw.

if it wasn't that i have about a million things linked to it since like 2000 i would have changed... have my IP provider account, gmail, uni account and just discovered I also a non university, university account on the unix system muhahaha... so I don't need it, just would take ages to redo things 9yeah ZI know i can redirect, but its not the same)

Hotmail used to go dormant after 1month of not logging in and then cancelled after 200odd days i think but it's changed now.

I signed up to Hotmail in 1999 when it wasn't Microsoft, I don't think I'd ever change it now even though I got very annoyed when they stopped the pop3 service last year, I used to use it with outlook express and not get all the adverts.

I'm old fashioned when it comes to change.. i've had the same mobile phone number since 1996
(well the code changed from 04 to 077)

I tried to close a facebook account once...

Never tried with hotmail, though I agree the fact that my wife uses MSN does not mean I want to every time I log in can be annoying!
