I think the idea was to help people that aren't able to pedal in circles! Bit like biopace. When the pedals are vertical the springs, that have stored up some energy, give you a bit more push before they return to horizontal again.

Silly idea!!!

See I don't think that's such a great idea. Aside from the extra weight, I ride like Rob Warner with the pedal under the arch of my foot -not the ball. So that is going to stick out loads.
