Well I had been waiting like a young child, all exited for my first retro purchase to arrive in the post, what appeared in the advert as a shiny silver H20 cage and was advertised in “excellent conditionâ€

am I expecting too much for a 15 year old item? Rant over
Matt :(

All of the H20's I've bought have been that age and all have been fine, all I can suggest is request better pix before you buy....the other thing to suggest being as it's silver is strip off the ano and polish it up....I doubt it would look much different in the end.

Caustic Soda - do a search on there, there's a few threads explaining how to do it....might be worth posting a pic of the cage here first though, in case stripping and polishing won't improve it....

Start off with..

try a bit of AUTOSOL and elbow grease first..this should improve it

Ringle cages are a little fragile though so no to intensive matey..

Just bought a set of disc brakes off the bay..turned up with no rotors :(

Turns out not included in the auction! :x

it pays to be super cautious and ask lots of questions befor the bidding plunge...

It doesn't matter how old the item is, excellent condition is excellent condition, regardless of the age or anything else. There is some interpretation what 'excellent'means and a small scratch is one thing, any pitting at all would absolutely rule out excelllent in my opinion.

I bought a bikethat had to have the shifters, brake levers, housings, and seat post replaced. We went back and forth and the seller said such things are to be expected. I then quoted his listing:

"HERE'S AN OUTSTANDING KLINE ATTITUDE...IN EXCELLENT CONDITION...THIS HAS TO BE ONE OF THE FINEST VINTAGE KLINE'S IN THE COUNTRY..."

I said that that the bike is used but he chose to use these terms and one the finest Kleins in the country shouldn't come with a cracked seatpost and eventually got what a fair deal in terms of a refund. So if the seller says something, the item should be what they describe.

Without detailed pictures it's hard to say, but if you feel the ad was deceptive, ask for a partial refund and spiff it up like others have said. I've had 3-4 times where I've asked for a partial refund and once where I insisted upon a return and so far I've gotten satisfaction. If you never ask, you'll never get anything.

shine it up

It's 15 years old and I'd take some mothers aluminum polish and "0000" steel wool to it to remove the stuff and shine it up. If it were on your bike and riding it you'd maintain it wouldn't you?
