I've happily EBayed away over the last few years having nothing but positive experiences. Buying and selling and getting 100s of positive feedbacks

Today my inbox contains this:

"Hi,

I bought the dawes ladies bike from you, very recently.

I was changing the rear derulier, as it was very outdated, and I wanted to install an 8 gear wheel. During the process, when I took the derailleur out, I found that the rungs have completely worn out and corroded, so much so that I cannot install neither the old nor the new derailleur, so the the bike is no longer useable. Also, the rear wheel was not straight, and the disks were very loose.
This is setting me back from touring, we were expecting to leave on sunday. My friend has flown here from canada, and her time is limited. A prompt reply would be greatly appreciated."

The only bit that matches reality is the "I bought the Dawes ladies bike from you, very recently." part

It's non disk! No rust! No bent bits! I'm guessing 'rungs' are threads? I've asked him what he really expects from me... That will be interesting

Argy Bargy

Well he initially asked for a 75% refund, including postage, then 50%...

I offered a partial refund to enable him to get a helicoil fitted as a goodwill gesture although I don't think I'm at fault

So I've suggested he use EBay's dispute resolution process

I wonder what will happen there!

I would tell him to open a dispute as you have done then be totally open and honest with ebay. I had a problem a while back and ebay ruled in my favour which i was shocked at as i was the seller and they seem to favour the buyers.

I'll be sure to report back on the outcome, this is yet another reason selling in RB is cool, cos you are selling to people who know what they are doing, or will ask for opinion before getting the wrenches out

Just didn't see much of a market for a Dawes Ladies tourer on RB hence venturing onto the realm of the fools

I guess he didn't realise that the derailuer would have shifted 8 gears without problem anyway!

The first I knew of any hint of dissatisfaction was that email - Pure craziness

Sounds like he knackered the threads putting the new mech on. How else was the old one held in if the threads were shot?

If it's a replaceable derailleur hanger, the most you should consider refunding is the price of a hanger.

Sounds like a chancer looking for a bit of holiday money.

From what I've seen of your bikes on here I find it hard to believe you'd knowingly fudge something of poor quality off on anyone - more like he cross-threaded the derailleur putting it back on and stripped the thread himself!

Even then all is not lost - all he needs is one of these;

...and he's back on the road in no time!

What kind of person would wait till the last second to check things over ,especially if theyre going off cyclotouring :?
Scam artist trying to have the cake and eat it .If he/she/it goes to dispute, send paypal/ebay an email saying you're adamant that it wasn't in that condition when you sent it.
Stamp your foot several times with these people and really stick to your guns ,threaten legal action if a refund is given,i doubt they'll want to go down that road:? .
If it looks like you're very serious you might find them more receptive to your point of view.
