excuse my ignorance, but is there a connection between the "Fat chance" mtb people and Dawes, at around this time 1984 i used to climb over the fence of the dawes factory from the cut (canal)when they were based in speedwell road Birmingham,climb onto the roof and do a stunt man jump into a load of frame boxes we had piled up for the very purpose, oh happy days 
we also used to find lots of bikes bits about, lots of them strumey archer 3 speed shifters i seem to remember, though hadnt a clue in them days what they were, as i would have been on my raleigh blazer or burner and gears were for old people
