Early Steel Lemond help!!!

Retro Newbie
Hello All,

I guess a few introductions are in order as this is my first post and am new meat to the forums. I am an avid rider of both Road and MTB bikes. I have a preference to older steel road bikes from the 80s and 90s. I currently ride a 83 Motobecane Super Mirage which i have owned since 84. its on it second top to bottom overhaul and sill rides and looks great. I get paid to ride at work due to the fact that i am assigned as a bicycle patrol officer in the DC area. I decided to start on a new project that I scored? recently (Greg Lemond "Maillot Jaune"). I do have a few questions about its origin and history and figured I would turn to some people with some real knowledge and connections in the cycle world. I have posted links to several pic below. I am rather sure it is a Billato made frame due to the fact the brake bridge is stamped with handmade on the topside and SILVA underneath. The frame is all steel of an unknown type as there are no decals as to the type of tubes used. All decals are under the clear coat and it seems that it was painted by "Rainbow Cycle Craft" in Colorado. There is no Ten Speed Drive Imports sticker at all so i am guessing it is before or after TSD. I can find no serial number stamed on the BB shell other than a lone # 1 stamped before painting. The paint scheme seems similar to the old GAN team bikes but the decals look different. The rear drop (Campy) spacing is 126mm as I measure. The top tube does have a braze on numbers hanger toward the head tube. overall its in great shape and should make a nice ride. I don't really care what its worth I just want to learn more about it and get started on building it. All I know about the origin of this frame is that it came out of a yard sale in AZ and sat in a box for ten years and was sold by the owners wife after he passed away. Thanks in advance for any Info.[/img]

there is a beautiful lemond in this months retro road bike of the month competition (top thread at top of the retro road forum page) if you are looking for some inspiration!

That frame looks like inspiration by itself, beautiful looking thing well done on that find and i for one look forward to seeing it built up!

anyway sorry i can't be any use on your question but i'm sure someone with knowledge will be along shortly  welcome though!

There is a forum member with Lemond in his user name. I'm sure he will be able to help. Welcome to the forum! Looks like you are going to fit in well!

Hi that would be me then, been busy a while so nice to check out the land of retro bikes.

This is a strange one, there should be a frame number on the BB opposite way to the number 1. The logos are during the transitional logo period as you have the older style GL head tube badge with a newer style Greg Lemond down tube badge. I owned a Ten Speed Drive Imports frame in red and white that had this combination but had the TSD sticker (which is always under clearcoat).

Also the USA logo is down the bottom whereas it should be near the top and there is no frame material sticker on the same tube. On the USA sticker does it list the Tour De France and World Champion years or just say Tour De France, World Champion and Jr Worlod Champion?

Looking at the time line of this colour it has to be late 1991 post Z Team Season 1991 but pre Gan Season 1992 as frames after this had the Gan logo on later lemonds 1n 93 & 94 didnt but by then the downtube logo had altered again to to Italic letter style.

My Guess and it is a guess is that it is a prototype or sample due to the weird position of the labels in a non Lemond normal manner. It is a Lemond as this is cast into the frame.

Greg Lemond is on facebook so you could always ask the question directly

Cheers

Tim

Tim,

Just had a look see at the BB shell and the only other marking is what looks like a 3 but its raised not stamped into the shell (See Pic below) The USA sticker shows the TDF 86, 89 Jr world 79 and world 83. I shot Greg and email a week ago but have not heard anything as of yet. I also sent one to Billato as well. Any idea when Rainbow Cycle Craft was painting Lemonds bikes? I believe they are still in operation. Do you have any idea on the BB size and treads. Also what compos would have been on this ride??? I am itching to build (Like I need another Project)

Thanks all for the welcome

Brett

The only limited snippet of info I can offer is that the steel tubing used probably came from the Excell stable as was usually the case with steel Lemonds in the pre-Trek era.

Hi Brett

Cant help with Rainbow Craft only know that the TSD frames were sprayed in house in USA whilst I presume the others (I have also owned a coal black Z team frame as well without a TSD label) were sprayed in Italy but this is a guess only Bilato would know.

Thinking about it, your frame has the name on the rear triangle like my Calfee Lemond which is dated to 1991 so I think this is a late 1991 inbetween the Z to Gan team colours switch. If this is the case it depends on your choice of era, if Z then its Campagnolo C-Record - not cheap though, if its Gan then Mavic or may choice would be Mavic Zap (if you can find it on ebay as it does appear from time to time).

Frame BB and headset will be Italian threads, material could be Excell or Columbus.

Hope this helps

Tim

hey, just noticed this thread and immediately thought that BB shell looks familiar!

check my Gan Boardman Cougar build thread, pics of the BB shell are most of the way down on page 1 the BB shell is the same, my frame was built by Terry Dolan, apparently he had been building frames for everyone from Tony Romiger to Marco Pantani to not to mention Boardman so Lemond wouldn't be a stretch as a possibilty, he also used columbus and reynolds tubing back then so it could be anything tubing wise.
