Early 90s parts?

I may have acquired a nice early 90s frame for resto, I have a 600 Ultegra groupset to go on it but what about other bits?

I don't know what sort of 'bars are from that era, and what about mixing groupset components, is that a no-no? Only I have some nice Dura Ace hubs and I was thinking of using a DA headset as well.

I like early 90's Shimano. Are you talking STI of downtube? Probably 7sp too. Nothing wrong with using Duraace hubs and HS (Love duraace stuff). I have a preference for Cinelli as I preferred their stems to 3TTT. A nice Cinelli XA stem paired with some criterium bars. Turbo saddle or Rolls if you want something more bling; if you are into weight saving then a Flite titanium. Good rims at the time were Mavic MA40's for std square section of Mavic Open 4CD for a slightly deeper rim (they also offered a ceramic coated version).

I actually have a mint NOS 600AX stem, the one with all the hidden bolts, but I was thinking it would perhaps be out of place, a plain later 600 stem would be nice though!

Frame is a touch smaller than I'm used to so I'm not sure if there'll be enough slack in one of the lovely Shimano aero seatposts to use one of them, but with prices being as strong as they are at least I can try one and flog it if it doesn't work.

I have a Rolls too, but whilst they look right I don't get on with traditional saddles, for anything over an hour in the saddle I need one with the channel down the middle that removes perineum pressure, the saddle be my only broken rule because I intend to ride it.

I agree with building a bike so that you can actually ride it. It's always nice to do period if you can if it's going to hang on a wall but you need to make the mods you need to make to ride them. I'm building a 1980 Raleigh and I'm trying to stick to standard spec but there will be stuff I need to change to suit me. I always think that if I was buying that bike in 1980 then they would probably be the mods that I would make at the time anyway.

Yes I've seen your thread, lovely bike, and I agree RE: subtle changes to make it comfortable to ride.

I always think 90s builds look great with 3TTT anatomic bars, matched with a 3TTT stem. There is something distinctly 90s about the angular and aggressive shaping of the bars. Planet X have (or did have) some NOS of stems and bars, going pretty cheap. The thing is now they may only have funny widths of bars left, 38cm or 46cm, but nothing in between. Or as said above, Cinelli XA is great too, matched with cinelli bars of course!

(I work for neither 3TTT or Planet X by the way, honest!!!)

P.S. Your 600AX stem will go for serious bucks on ebay or over at lfgss, if you can bare to part ways with it :?

I think I paid serious bucks for it!

If it won't look out of place on the bike I will use it, only thing being it's a 25.4 clamp which kind of limits bar choice.

I have a pair of nice Wolber TX Profils I could use which I think won't look out of place.
