Hi, i'm converting to an e-type front mech on my alpinestars and wondered if anyone could tell me at what angle it should be mounted. I get the impression that it should run inline with the seat post (or where the seat post should be), but want to be 100% sure before commiting.

If I get it wrong now it will never shift right so any advice gratefully received.

e-type

Once you mount it on the bottom bracket there's only the one angle. It's pre-set.
Does your Alpinestars have an e-type mounting bolt? If it doesn't, then you probably shouldn't use one as there will probably be too much flex in the derailleur cage.

shimano e type

The green arrow shows where the mounting bolt meets the frame.

Hi David, my frame does not have the mounting boss, I have the frame stripped back to bare metal, I've fabricated a boss and need to know where to situate it in order to get the shift right (as the old alpinestars has a very poor mech hanging arrangement). I'm concerned that there might be a rule to them (eg vertical through the BB, or inline with the seat post line). By eye it looks as though the bolt hole should follow the line of the seat post, but I want to be 100%. As I say if it's wrong now it always will be.

I found a possible solution to your frame problem. There is a company called Problem Solvers that produces a clamp for frames that don't have an e-type mounting bolt. Here is at least one source, there are probably many others:

The seat tube on the alpinestars is curved around the back wheel so this would offset the mech positioning. Also the frames welds are 1/2" above BB where this clamp is designed to sit.

I'll post some photo's when I get back from work later this evening. Thanks for your efforts though.

The original front mech was similar to the braze on type that modern road bikes use but using a straight through bolt. They were forever coming loose under load and a pig to setup. I'm also converting to shimano mega 9. This why i'm going for the e-type.

I'll post some pics later this evening when i get home from work.

Thinking about David you've solved my problem. If the clamp goes directly onto the seat tube then the correct orientation of the bolt must be in line with the seat tube.

Unless anybody can add anything else I think that's problem solved. Thanks everyone.
