Dura-Ace AX Handlebar or similar?

Retro Newbie
Hi,

Just wondered if anyone can help with sourcing a Dura Ace AX handlebar or something similar for a 25.4 stem?

I have a Raleigh Road Ace (1986) in excellent condition apart from the Dura Ace handlebars coming loose from the outer tube/sleeve. My local bike shop have said they need replacing and I'd love to get the same ones if possible although I know they're rare.

If anyone knows of any for sale or can suggest a suitable alternative I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks!!!

James

Re:

Check Hilary Stones website as he has some Raleigh 25.4 bars on his site.

Weren't Dura ace ax 26.0 ? Mind you the memory is a bit frazzled so may be wrong.

Pretty sure this is correct, I've only ever seen 'em in 26.0...

Re:

Thanks for the replies!

The guy in my local shop said I needed 25.4 but I've only seen 26.0 from looking online, and that's ebay auctions that have already ended.

The bike pretty much has shimano components throughout (600 and ax) so I'd like to keep it that way but it's proving difficult.

Can anyone recommend a similar handlebar that will fit in with the aesthetics of the bike? I've seen other models that had the Sakae SR Road Champion bars. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

James

Handlebars are a bit of personal choice really, 26mm opens up a world of possibilities :)

Sakae SR Road Champion would be a good choice but be aware they did a few different designs. I have a few sets and they are completely different in shape. The UK jobbies are a bit track like and rounded and not to my taste.

I like square bars as they offer a good range of positions for my knackered arms and shoulders so would go for the later Cinelli Giro D'italia in 26mm, the 3ttt Merckx or the square Jap Sakae SR.

The world as they say is your oyster :)

Find another 600ax stem to match the bike, be sure its 26mm though.

DAAX bars are very valuable so don't ditch them.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for your reply. I'm not sure if i've misunderstood but I've been told it's an issue with the handlebar itself rather than the stem. The bike already has a 600ax stem.

When I was riding the other week the handlebars slipped down when I had to brake sharply. I tightened the stem and then the same thing happened a week later. My local bike shop then advised that the outer sleeve on the handlebar is no longer attached to the handlebar and it cannot be fixed.

Have you heard of this problem before?

Cheers,

James

Thanks for the advice Shaun! I asked the shop to measure again and they've confirmed it's 26.0.

Nope, can't ever recall the sleeve coming detatched from the main part of the handlebars...............
