Drowning in a sea of retro (fleet rationalisation content)

Thanks for all the 'helpful' suggestions. It would seem that contrary to my initial thoughts, I may not actually have enough bikes or variations thereof, although I did forget to mention my cadex commuter and whilst it is way too small a frame, the rocky mountain cirrus estay and the clockwork I built for my wife, and the wooden balance bike my two year old has. All of this has to currently fit in a two bedroom ground floor flat, no cellar/basement and only a shed in a small garden (it is london after all). 5 wide is as much as I dare squeeze in.

Speaking of squeeze, if I were to store things boxed, what's the best way of doin this? I assume rear wheel on, bars/forks to the side, seat post out (no scratching of logos for me) and front wheel tucked in somewhere?

It's very rational to keep a specific "errand" bike too rather than use your other lovely retro top drawer ones. Similar grade to a pub bike, but with a better saddle for slightly longer distances because you will be sober. It still should not be attractive to thieves of course, so nothing to blingy or shiney.

BTW: Don't confuse the "errand" bike to the "hack" bike.
After my move I'm going to need a station bike I think, but I fear that time spent on here has turned me into a bike snob. My commuter is an old carbon cadex running m952, ceramic Rolf wheels and pace rc36 evos. It would appear I have many problems, albeit nothing serious

Gator fade Klein rascal
Complete bar a couple of nice to haves

Gt team rts (my dream bike bitd)
Complete and sporting last seasons modern xtr, cross max ceramics and fox forks

Pace RC200 F3
In progress, need to fettle a few things, get the right front mech

Amp b3
Frame in a cupboard, xt m737 group set and parts all accumulated and ready (no time or storage)

Fat chance yo eddy
Again sourced an xc pro group set and the rest of the parts to build it, but not got time/space and also whilst ive always wanted to try one of these, the seat tube has been replaced and is no longer the standard fat size (pros and cons for this), but keep thinking about getting this replaced and/or just buildin as is

Mongoose Amplifier
Stripped, powdercoated, new decals, m900 and awaiting some time to tinker with the rear shock mounting so it doesn't rattle

Dbr Axis Ti
Got all the parts and it is partially built but in a box as I have no space to store it when finished

Amp b5
Newly acquired but have pretty much everything to mount on it

Main reasons being that you have two great full sussers with ethe b3 and the RTS. You don't seem to have love for the DBR Axis Ti.

The keepers gives you three iconic and useable hard tails and a couple nice sussers.

If you can afford to keep the parts then keep em' if not then sell the easier to find stuff.

Oh yeah and sell me your RC30's ;)

Cheers for the advice. I do have some love for my dbr, been a long and painful road to get it where it is and would love to finish it.

As for the b3 and mongoose amplifier, I'm interested to know what the real differences are in the frame and ride etc, as I was thinking of parting with the b3 and I've put a lot of effort into the amplifier so .....

You have it bad too!!

I started clearing out in Jan. Now the numbers have gone up again.

It's ridiculous. Now a job change means less money but more time 8)

That means the numbers have to go down. I'll get on it next month!

and my mind starts to think about the hassle of all the builds I've yet to complete, the ones I've yet to begin and the fact that I've so much retro stuff it is sometimes hard to think about where to begin. I guess I'm losing motivation as I have so much to do and it seems a never ending battle to find the time, and even if I did manage that, I'm at the point where if I finish one more build, I've nowhere to safely store it (from the elements or thieves)

Sounds like you know what you need to do but don't want to do it as, TBH, you have a very nice collection - thin it down; less bikes to think about, less to store, easier to focus and restore motivation with what you've got.

I struggle to part with stuff at the best of times yet need no encouragement to buy more. Space is a serious issue again (sig is not accurate...) and I've resolved to sell off bikes/frames/parts that I've had for months (years) yet haven't used.

You might say to yourself, 'but what if I need that [insert component/frame/fork] in a month or so, or for a later build?' - this is the trap I fell into; it's easy to convince yourself that, for example, you need a choice of 4 different hubsets for your build () but when I thought about it that's 3 hubsets that could be used on 3 other bikes by 3 other people rather than sitting in my garage gathering dust - rationalising is the way to move forward when you're stuck in a retro-rut.

Keep the RTS though as I know you love it :)
