Drowning in a sea of retro (fleet rationalisation content)

If your about to thin the fleet and it's because of cash needs then obviously you need to sell the ones that will give the best cash return but realistic prices will see them sold unrealistic will see them stay so breaking them might see the cash come in

If your just retro'd out and not feeling the love then out the ones that you would out without a single thought

If your outing some because a mixture of the above and the fleet is so big that you are just not riding them and they are exspensive ornaments then asking people for input is the best way.
Thankfully money is not the driver, it's a combination of not feeling the love (well I do, but it's always a hassle to get even the smallest task done due to the logistics of getting to a bike and associated parts required for the task), and not riding them. The latte isn't such a huge issue as I like nice things, and I will ride when I get the time/opportunity after I move, but I have this nagging feeling that I've simply far too many, and even when I do get the opportunity, I'll still not necessarily ride them all, or that often.

I gave serious thoughts to no more projects but then I got an e-stay...
I keep saying no more projects, sell a bunch of stuff, but soon after more stuff has arrived than I parted with.

I think a sensible head over heart' approach is to make 2 lists, then cross reference them.

list 1 - the bikes & their intended completed spec.
list 2 - the type of riding you do and the bike you need / prefer for it.

mine is simple (once i get all them finished)...

modern components on a retro rigid is used for 'combo' rides or more leisurely stuff - if there is nothing too technical / rough & i'm either doing a combo of offroad & forest or doing fireroads / towpaths & a bit of singletrack then this is the ride.

1x9 hardtail for the days i'm almost completely off road or if the riding pace isn't going to be too quick i'll use it for road / path stuff (if i'm with the missus for example)

low / mid level component rigid will be used with a kiddie seat / trailer / tag along for when the nipper gets a touch older

homemade 700c roadie / commuter is used for commuting, roads & on the trainer.

what I would like at some point down the line is a turn of the century, maybe slightly later xc derived full suss with xt level kit. this hopefully will tie in with my business taking off enough to allow me to drop my employed hours & have full days out rather than just stealing the odd 2 hours here & there. I'm really lucky in that storage space isn't a problem so I can easily sit on a few complete bikes & they won't even be noticed let alone be in the way!

Postpone the problem. Complete unfinished builds, ride them, then decide to buy a new project.

I'd love to, but with a house move in a few months or so, it will just be more to move. The problem with completing the builds (I almost did on teh DBR but took it back apart) is that I really have nowhere to store it/them. 5 bikes likes up in the shed, two more stacked up on top of them, one in a box, one wrapped up carefully. A frame hanging ine the shed, one bike and two frames by the back door, and one frame in the under stairs cupboard, along with boxes of components - there in lies the problem - space mostly.

Nice problem to have

Heh...

So it did not help meeting me today to purchase new 'stock'!

I know your pain, and although my fleet was not as large as yours I have recently decided to have a clearout (inc modern stuff) and downsize to my perfect retro build with only the cleanest nos parts I can find (merlin build thread to follow soon) and then build a retro/modern frankenbike to satisfy another bike craving I need to address. These two things combined have reinvigorated my retro enthusiasm and although my stock has downsized some what I don't have any nagging guilt of stuff just gathering dust....

Another way to look at it is for you to just concentrate on getting one bike built at a time... Meanwhile trying to avoid eBay or the sales forum here until, you have a few bikes actually built and ridden... You never know but you may find you hate the ride on some of the bikes which may make things easier.

Ps - first dibs on any m900 goodies or any 'perfect' 27.2 seat post action! (sorry I know this is not a for sale thread but could not help it!!)

It would be easy to say 'You don't really need three Amps' but I have two cro-megas and my 'Kili Wot' so I have three e-stays, which just about amounts to the same thing...

...my biggest problem was my shed; it's 10 x 8 but was in such sh*t state I couldn't do anything without stumbling over stuff to try and reach other stuff, which was always underneath other stuff!

So I emptied everything out onto the patio, moved the existing shelf unit and knocked up some more, plus a small work area; now I've got five fully built bikes in a space where I could barely fit two, wheels and tyres are hooked up on the walls instead of in the way, bags of stuff are hung up neatly instead of piled up on top of each other - and I know where everything is 8)

The upshot is I can actually see what I have achieved so far, and it isn't anywhere near the hassle it used to be to start something else when I have a moment.

SWMBO's Spesh will be next up for completion, followed by my RSP 853 full bouncer, then either my Cinder Cone or my second cro-mega; the 3-speed 'fixie' style project can wait, as can my Team Banana Falcon which just needs the rear wheel re-dishing to fit...

...all in all I'm motivated and happy; I've even started to lose some weight!

Meeting up and replenishing stock was a treat, not a problem, I guess I just go headlong into a project/buying frenzy without thinking about the consequences.

As for the m900 bits you are after, I'll drop you a PM with some pics over the weekend :)

Oh, and I may well go down the same route as your - seeking clarity and focus instead of branching out in too many directions.

Selling parts/bikes is so much more difficult than buying though

Cheers for the inspiration, and it does indeed work. I think I have just got past the stage where I can effectively keep things in order/indoors any more.

That's part of the fun though isn't it!?

Thanks for looking out for some m900 stuff.

The best thing for me was moving from a flat to a house with a garage with its own eaves space... Adds clarity as has been said already...
