Drivetrain component clean and repair service

I would it’s just the worst for me taking pics😫. I keep forgetting😆

Not even 1 example?

I get the sentiment but if people are going to send you parts to restore (albeit free) then likely it would be a good idea to show what to expect back. Over the years I’ve seen some “interesting” ideas of what people class as restoration on bike parts. Whenever collecting a bike from a “engineer” I usually find horrendous ideas they’ve executed.

A good example of this working well is Peachys saddle restoration service. He’s done many for happy members and the pics sell it for him. I could offer the same service but I know it wouldn’t be 10% of how his saddles come back.

May be worth getting some cheap parts locally and doing those and then showing the process and how they ended up

I agree with this

Make a little portfolio and have some fun showcasing how neat and tidy you can get stuff, personal challenge, and if some people think 'hey I can't be arsed doing anything with this mucky tat' and they see this fella does a good job of it, you may hook a few!

Along with pics to show what you can do i.e before and after, you should also state what 'cleaning' products you will use and what you wouldn't use when cleaning certain things.
A good example would be o-rings and plastic parts made of particular materials that will change, for the worse, when cleaned with an unsuitable product.

You need to be careful as something like a disc caliper, or hydraulic lever, could be made unsafe and you really don't want that on your plate.

Right, having looked through pictures and the mind palace, I have realised that I don’t really have that much experience in fixing parts, I do have experience sort of doing restoration of some things and painting. I really just started this thread to get a better understanding, which I do. Cleaning products, I use wd40 and some mo94 if found. Because I’ve only worked on some REALLY rough stuff. Like a proper rusted cassette rusted chainrings and a seized front mech. But that’s my way of fixing things, I don’t just look at a rusted chainring and chuck it on the bin, there are no cracks or damage, so I hit it on the grinder and it takes it off nicely👍 I have some examples.currently repainting a frame in a sort of zebra pattern so that’ll look nice when it’s done. There is one this wd40 and a hammer didn’t fix though, a set of cranks in a vice, pedal wrench, buckets of wd40 and a massive 2kg hammer and it isn’t moving one mm. I am looking on eBay but people aren’t really selling really rough drivetrain components for me to restore.

So I’m just checking eBay to find something I can prove myself with👍

These are the only pics I can be bothered to upload im sorry😆 there are more

I do have a csepel csilag in Hungary that I’m working on, my god it’s rusty😆 it’s handlebars have been welded to the stem and the quill has completely seized into the fork.

In the nicest of ways ….. I think you need to build your experience and expertise before offering it out to people.

This forum is full of skilled people who will offer advice I’m sure as many have been doing this for a long time.

Buy a absolute dog of a bike locally and restore the whole thing firstly. Gives you lots to go at and also gives you a idea on what to expect from each parts restoration. Once completed sell it on, and buy another.

Once you take on work from the general public albeit free there is a certain expectation there and a really easy way to get unwanted grief.

I’ve gained somewhat of a reputation for doing well on Zaskar polish jobs from likely completing maybe 30 upwards now to the point I’m asked to do it for people. I don’t as it’s simply grief when it goes wrong or the highest level isn’t achieved.

Cleaning parts is not restoration in my eyes. I clean many horrible cassettes , mechs , brakes on a daily basis and it requires little talent nor time with the right product.

Paint is a wizardry so if that’s your niche then you’ll have many takers. Upload some pics and go from there.

I mean it is why I started this thread, to get some much better experience than i can get with an engine. Just looking on the web and can’t really find any bikes rough enough for my standards. No one really sells sort of barn find bikes anymore? I did start another thread looking for old projects that people just took out the shed. Let me know if there is anything you find.

^ This.

I will add though getting a dog of a bike and stripping it for parts also works. For example a ladies bike with bent forks will be cheap to buy and the parts would probably have low miles and worth restoring. There is no point in attempting to restore worn out parts, except from a learning exercise.
